During the summer of 2005 one of our customers requested our help
with a problem that had shutdown their business. This was an
average size business of 20 or so employees. The problem was a
virus that had infected their office computers and although they had
implemented a back-up server, using a RAID array, they weren't
prepared for this kind of problem. The data wasn't stored on a
separate drive, disconnected form the live network. They had
an anti-virus program installed on the server, but the virus
definitions were out-of-date. The virus was able to do what it
does best. Put people out of business. Being
self-perpetuating, it infected all the executables files on every
computer on their network. The RAID array had duplicated all of the
infected files, so the backup was useless. All of their
important data was corrupted. The repair was long, difficult
and expensive. And at times it looked impossible.
After 2 weeks and thousands of dollars later, their data was
recovered and their business restored.
Most fortune 500 companies use the same basic techniques to protect
their data:
- All their systems are completely automated
- The data is copied to a central location
- Highly-skilled technicians implement and monitor the process
Osage Communications then spent several months searching for the right
hardware and software to enable this backup system to work for a typical
company, without the high overhead. We now have a remote online
backup system that allows us to set up a centralized backup server
so that our customers can lease
a highly-effective backup system with no overhead.
The advantages to a typical business are enormous:
- All files are protected by state-of-the-art encryption. Only the
customer can retrieve their files.
- Completely automated off-site protection.
- Fast online recovery of any version of any protected file.
- Easy installation and setup.
- Only an Internet connection is required, eliminating the need
for expensive backup equipment and media.
- The backup server is monitored by highly-skilled technicians whose
only job is to make sure the backups are performed properly.
This is how it works....
We operate an off-site storage facility for the user's data. At
the facility, an account is maintained for each user. Each account
is protected by a password known only to the user.
The electronic vault system is set up so that at a preset time, usually
late at night, the client's computer automatically wakes up and prepares
its data for backup. The backup software determines which files have been modified since
the last backup, compresses them, and encrypts them for security. When the
data is ready, the computer uses its modem or Internet connection to contact our
servers and
transmit the data.
Our servers verify the incoming customer data, scans for viruses and stores the data. The data is also mirrored
to another server in a separate location using redundant Internet
connections for fail-safe protection. Our customers can rest assured that their data is safe, because
it is stored off-site.
